The Influence of Stress of Critical Life Events on Self-Neglect in Elderly Living Alone: The Mediating Effect of Sense of Mastery

Abstract
The study is to prevent self-neglect of the elderly living alone. For this reason, it verified empirically the influence of stress of critical life events on self-neglect and the mediating effects of a sense of mastery. For this, survey were conducted on the elderly living alone who are over 65 years old and using basic elderly care services in Daejon City and data from 370 people used for analysis. analysis conducted through structural equations model showed that the goodness of fit of the model presented in this study was favorable with CFI=.965 and RMSEA=.051. So, one hwo has a low sense of mastery (¥â=-.372, p<.001) or a higher stress of critical life events (¥â=.188, p<.05) caused much higher levels of self-neglect. In addition, the sense of mastery of the elderly mediated between stress of critical life events and self-neglect. Based on the results of this study, practical alternatives were presented for awareness improvements on self-neglect, education for practical experts, and the establishment and supplementation of preventive systems to relieve the self-neglect phenomena of the elderly living alone.
